FRIDAY PUZZLE — Well, that was fun. Ori Brian is back, and he offers us a Friday that experienced solvers might find fairly easy, but there are enough speed bumps to slow you down a bit.
Don’t race through this one. Take the time to enjoy the crunchy entries; those stacks in the northeast and southwest are great, as are the long Down entries. And even the slightly shorter entries in the west and east are fun. O.K., I pretty much liked the whole thing.
1A: I had OPEN before BITE for “Dentist’s instruction,” but TOM THUMB at 3D helped a lot.
5A: Brilliant clue. “Drawing that nobody wants” had my brain working overtime. What kind of drawing could the clue be hinting at? The answer is the drawing of the SHORT STRAW. That’s hilarious.
15A: “Stirs” can be a verb or a noun, so which one should we pick? There is no four-letter word I can think of that describes the physical act of stirring, so let’s try a noun answer. “Stirs” can also be fights or dust-ups. The answer to this clue is ADOS.
24A: This one had me going for a while. I really wanted this to be IDES, and I think that was the point. IDES is easy. “March 15, e.g.” is also a DATE.
26A: I had to look up HOUSE RULE, and once again, there is no shame in doing that (I have no shame anyway, but that’s another column). Apparently, my household is not the only one that makes up its own rules when playing Cards Against Humanity.
30A: “Fire sale?” is a bit stretchy, but I get where it’s going. The answer is ARMS DEAL, which is fine, except that what you sell in that deal are the arms, not the fact that they fire. Maybe that’s why it has the question mark.
54A: The answer to “Event that catches someone by surprise?” can’t be SURPRISE PARTY, because 1) that would duplicate the word “surprise” in both the clue and the entry and b) there aren’t enough squares. The answer is POLICE RAID, which is definitely surprising.
1D: I had PILL before BATH, but most cat owners would probably put both of those right up there as “Difficult thing to give to a cat.”
9D: You know what else fits in a five-letter slot with the clue “Recurrent theme”? MOTIF. The answer in this puzzle is TROPE.
12D: It sounds like the clue, “One helping to set the stage,” might be hinting at a NARRATOR, but that’s too long for our six-letter slot. The answer is ROADIE, who also helps to “set up” the stage.
25D: Shout out to the fabulous show “BLACK MIRROR" (“Netlfix show inspired by ‘The Twilight Zone’”), which also happens to be a New York Times Crossword debut.
42D: “Intro courses?” could be those classes one takes in the first year of college, but not with that question mark. Think about what else “courses” could mean. They could be the courses of a meal, and the intro courses would be SOUPS.
HEY, it’s my first themeless puzzle! This puzzle started with BLACK MIRROR — have you watched “Bandersnatch,” the show’s recent interactive episode? The choose-your-own-adventure mechanism is interesting, but the plot is pretty disturbing, so watch at your own risk.
OVERALL, I’m pretty happy with how this one came together. My favorite clue is “Game-changing invention?,” and I love the flair that Will and team added with their edits.
If you are college-aged (or younger) and want to try your hand at constructing a crossword, feel free to reach out to me. My email address is email@example.com. Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.
Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
