MONDAY PUZZLE — Tracy Gray and Jeff Chen team up to give us a warning that perhaps we need to slow down — not only to enjoy the puzzle, but also to avoid hitting anything in the grid. Drive through this one carefully.

29A: Hi, Mom! The initialism IMO stands for “in my opinion,” which is easier to use when texting than typing the whole thing out. (For those of you who object to my use of “Hi, Mom!” to convey an explanation about texting, as opposed to my usual “Hi, kids!,” please note that I am not talking about you or your mom. I am talking about my mom.)

35A: “Eye of NEWT and toe of frog,/Wool of bat and tongue of dog,/Adder’s fork and blindworm’s sting,/Lizard’s leg and howlet’s wing,/For a charm of powerful trouble,/Like a hellbroth boil and bubble.” That recipe is from the Scottish play, and is uttered by the second Witch. They just don’t make potions like that anymore.

40A: Obligatory “playful, furry” OTTER video:

3D: Well, I suppose that — technically speaking — the N.R.A. does support the Second Amendment. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

13D: I had no idea that Woodsy Owl was still around. I remember seeing these public service announcements on television when I was a child, most often something like this the ad below. GIVE A HOOT, don’t pollute. Don’t be a dirty bird!

48D: IMO (see 29A), Pepperidge Farm’s MILANO cookies are proof that the universe loves us and wants us to be happy.

55D: I had SIDES before EDGES, but corrected it as soon as I got 60A’s XED.

Terms for DEER cross each other, which is revealed to be a DEER XING at 43D. These words are part of longer phrases and are denoted by circled or shaded squares.

For example, at the crossing of 45D and 56A, a FAWN and a HIND (a female deer, especially a red deer) cross each other as part of the phrases FAWN OVER and HIND LEG. (Side note: “The Sound of Music” would probably not have become a classic had the lyrics been “HIND, a deer, a female deer …”)

I thought this was a very smooth solve with lots of lively entries, as well as bits of glue that were probably necessary to build and fill the grid (see Mr. Chen’s notes below). I predict that this puzzle will be a case in which figuring out the theme will be harder for some than solving the rest of the puzzle.

For one thing, the word HART is an archaic term for a male deer, which is now referred to as a STAG. I had to look it up, and first assumed that HART was the term for a group of deer. It probably wouldn’t be possible, but I think it would have been incredibly elegant had the constructors been able to cross the gendered terms with each other: STAG and HART are crossed, but HIND and DOE are not. A young DEER, FAWN, crosses the term HIND, and DOE crosses the revealer, which made understanding the theme just a bit harder for me.

Jeff Chen: I nearly gave up on this grid skeleton about eleventy-googol times. Backbreaking.

Tracy did a wonderful job of filling, especially in the SW corner. We had pegged this as a Monday theme, accessible to most anyone, so we wanted to make the fill as “newb”-friendly as possible. In some iterations though, I had put awesome (to me) material in the big bottom corners, proud of all the juice. But looking back on it, much of it was too tough for newbs.

Tracy helped us dial it back, favoring smoothness over going gonzo. I learned a lot from her Monday approach.

Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.

Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
